ISPS Conference - Decolonizing Mental Health
This talk explores how Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC) programs accredited by CACREP remain rooted in Eurocentric frameworks. With usually just one course on Cultural Diversity, these programs often fail to integrate multicultural perspectives across the curriculum — reinforcing colonizing themes that overlook or marginalize healing traditions from the African diaspora and Indigenous cultures. From both a clinician’s and lived-experience perspective, this presentation examines how these colonial narratives shape mental health education and introduces a decolonizing framework that reclaims cultural wisdom and inclusivity in therapy training.
